AI content detectors compared: GPTZero, Zhuque and ZeroGPT
Free quota shapes, Chinese-language ability and scoring granularity across three detectors, plus a self-check workflow for Chinese writers.
Prices, quotas, features and limits for all three come from catalogue records (lastVerifiedAt 2026-09-15). We did not measure detection accuracy and quote no accuracy figures.
Conclusion first: none of the three gives you a verdict
GPTZero, Tencent Zhuque and ZeroGPT are the three AI-content detectors Chinese-language writers meet most often. They share one property: each returns a signal about how machine-like a passage reads, and none can prove a text was written by a person. Zhuque's own limitation entry in our catalogue says the result is advisory, not proof; GPTZero's entry notes that false positives are common to every detector. Any tool that claims otherwise deserves suspicion.
Positioning, free quota and capability limits
Every cell below comes from our catalogue records; all three were last verified on 2026-09-15. Nothing here is inferred.
| Detector | Price | Chinese text | API | Strengths | Main limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPTZero | Free 10,000 words/month, paid from about $10 per month | Limited | yes | Sentence-level highlighting, batch file scanning, originality reports | Paid tiers charge by word volume |
| ZeroGPT | Free 15,000 characters per check, Pro $9.99 per month | Multilingual | yes | Sentence highlighting, bundled paraphrase and summary tools | Ad-supported free tier, core features behind Pro |
| Zhuque AI Detection | Free, with a daily check quota | Chinese-first | no public API | Text, image and video detection, suspicious-paragraph marking | Weak below 350 characters |
The differences concentrate on two axes. First, Chinese ability: GPTZero is flagged as limited on Chinese, Zhuque is optimised for it, ZeroGPT sits in between with broad multilingual coverage. Second, the shape of the free quota: a monthly word allowance, a per-check character ceiling and an unlimited-but-daily-capped service suit three different jobs, namely one long thesis, repeated medium drafts, and a high-volume editorial queue.
Why the same text scores differently in all three
Three causes, largest effect first:
- Training distribution. A detector only knows the models it was trained against. Zhuque is aligned to domestic models and Chinese corpora, GPTZero to mainstream English models, ZeroGPT broad but conservative. Chinese text generated by DeepSeek can easily pass GPTZero unnoticed.
- Decision granularity. GPTZero and ZeroGPT highlight sentences; Zhuque marks suspicious paragraphs. Different units guarantee different highlighted spans for the same article.
- Input handling. Characters and words are not the same measure, text beyond a per-check ceiling gets truncated, and very short passages lack statistical mass, which is exactly why Zhuque degrades below 350 characters. Measuring length before submitting removes one class of false alarms; our token counter reports token counts for four tokenizers and the limits in one view.
A safer workflow for Chinese writers
- Self-check first. Feed the passages you suspect into our AI tone detector. It reports statistical signals only, such as cliches, em-dash density and sentence-length uniformity, deliberately without an "AI percentage", and its job is to localise which sentence reads like a machine.
- Cross-check with two different calibres. Zhuque for Chinese, GPTZero for English, ZeroGPT as a quick no-signup screen.
- Treat disagreement as information, not as a tie to break. When the three disagree, the text sits in a grey zone and the answer is process evidence such as drafts, version history and edit logs, not a majority vote of scores.
- Never let a detector score be the sole basis for an action. Student appeals, contract terminations and compliance decisions cannot rest on this number; all three vendors say as much in their own limitation entries.
Three frequent false-positive patterns
Human text that gets flagged usually shares one of these shapes:
- English with heavy translation-ese: orderly clause structure and dense connectives are precisely the statistical signature models produce.
- Templated official and instructional prose. Once human writing becomes formulaic, its distribution moves toward model output; uniform sentence length and symmetrical paragraphs drive most of that.
- Long quotations and code blocks. Repetitive structure raises regularity in the perplexity curve, and most detectors handle such fragments poorly.
The fix is rewriting, not shopping for a friendlier score. If a draft will be machine-reviewed, follow the workflow above, and consider whether a writing-side tool belongs in the loop: something like Grammarly, which bundles grammar, tone and plagiarism checks, serves a different step than detection.
Beyond these three: when to build your own check
At a few hundred documents a day, quota caps and privacy terms become the binding constraint. None of the three offers a self-hosted detector; GPTZero and ZeroGPT expose APIs (check their current terms before integrating). Where data must leave nothing but your own network, the honest fallback is statistical self-inspection, which is what our in-site tool does. For a broader capability picture see our free AI chatbot and model ranking, remembering it ranks generation, not detection.

FAQ
- A detector flagged my writing as AI-generated. How do I appeal?
- Appeals rest on process evidence, not on another score. Ranked by persuasive power: timestamped drafts and version history, editor or Git change logs, your research trail, and an oral walkthrough of your reasoning. A detector number carries little weight precisely because every vendor documents false positives.
- Which one suits a Chinese-language thesis?
- Start with Zhuque, the only one of the three optimised for Chinese, accepting its daily quota and its weakness below 350 characters. Submit the whole document there, cross-check with ZeroGPT's 15,000-character per-check allowance, and reserve GPTZero for the English abstract.
- How does your tone detector relate to these three?
- It is neither a competitor nor the same judgement. Our detector reports explainable signals only, such as cliche density, em-dash usage and sentence-length uniformity, and it never prints an AI percentage, because we do not train a detection model and make no accuracy claim. Its purpose is to show you which sentences read mechanically before you submit anywhere.
